Redefining What It Means to Be the Best |
“Being the best” is one of the most misunderstood phrases in business. For some people, it means winning. For others, it means dominance. For others still, it means visibility. But the truth is, the definition is personal. And if you don’t define it for yourself, someone else will. To me, being the best means growing as fast as you can in every direction possible. Not recklessly. Not desperately. But intentionally. Expanding your capability. Expanding your people. Expanding your systems. Expanding your impact. Growth vertically and horizontally at the same time. And here’s where the conversation gets uncomfortable. You cannot be the best if you are afraid of profit. There’s this strange narrative that wanting significant profit somehow dilutes integrity. That pursuing margins makes you greedy. That charging appropriately makes you less noble. It’s nonsense. Profit is not ego. Profit is infrastructure. Profit is what allows you to pay top-tier wages. It’s what allows you to reward performance with meaningful bonuses. It’s what allows you to invest in tools, systems, and technology that elevate everyone inside your organization. Without profit, you don’t build a great company. You build a fragile one. The key is alignment. Pursue the highest level of profitability you ethically can, while remaining honest, heart-centered, and committed to the greater good. That’s the balance. That’s the real work. If you remove ego and focus on impact, profit becomes a byproduct of value creation. And value creation is the true measurement of greatness. So here’s the reflection question: Have you subconsciously limited your growth because you were uncomfortable owning your desire to be exceptional? Being the best isn’t about beating someone else. It’s about expanding your capacity so fully that your impact becomes undeniable. |
