Understanding Your Elemental Archetype for Better Leadership

I want to introduce you to a fascinating concept rooted in the work of Dr. Stephen Cohen. It’s about understanding the five elemental archetypes - Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. These elements aren’t just abstract ideas; they represent different qualities and characteristics in people. By understanding which elements dominate your personality, you can gain insight into your behaviors, especially under stress.

For instance, as I went through the assessment, I realized my primary element is Wood. Those with a Wood archetype are often visionaries and leaders. However, when we’re stressed, we’re prone to anger, headaches, and muscle tension. This isn’t a one-size-fits-all diagnosis, but it does help explain certain patterns in our lives.

What’s more, understanding your elemental type can also improve your relationships. If you’re Wood and your partner is Fire, for example, you might inadvertently "feed" that Fire, amplifying stress for both of you. Recognizing these dynamics allows you to navigate your personal and professional relationships with greater awareness.

This concept isn’t just about self-reflection; it’s a tool for growth. By understanding your elemental archetype, you can better manage your reactions, improve your leadership, and build more harmonious relationships. So take a moment to consider—what’s your primary element, and how is it influencing your life?
