What Do You Have to Lose…Except the Negative Self-Talk?

I get it. Sometimes, when you’re floundering—whether in business, leadership, or life—it’s easy to look for external reasons. The economy. Your coworkers. The market. Your team. But the hardest truth I’ve learned the hard way is that the biggest obstacle usually lives inside. It’s your own fault. Your own mindset. Your own choices.

I’ve been there. I’ve been successful before. I had momentum. Then I lost it—not because the economy shifted or my employees failed me—but because I stopped doing the simple, fundamental things that build and sustain confidence and certainty. I went broke. Flat broke. And I spent six years floundering, clawing my way back to a place of clarity and forward motion.

Here’s the thing about momentum—it’s fragile, but it’s also retrievable. And the first thing you have to do to create it is to lose the negative self-talk. Lose the doubts that whisper, “You can’t.” Lose the frustrations that convince you the obstacles are bigger than you are. Lose the stories that hold you hostage to past failures.

It might sound like woo-woo, but mindset is the engine behind everything. Confidence isn’t a nice-to-have; it’s the fuel that powers decisions, actions, and resilience. Certainty isn’t arrogance—it’s the foundation from which you lead effectively, influence your team, and navigate the inevitable challenges of business.

When I lost momentum, I could’ve pointed fingers. I could’ve blamed my environment. But the truth is, I had to own it. And owning it meant getting back to basics—doing the simple things that create momentum. That might be setting clear daily priorities, showing up with consistency, embracing discipline, or simply deciding to refuse the stories of defeat.

You have to refuse to stay stuck. Refuse to let the noise of negativity dictate your direction. Refuse to fall into the trap of helplessness or blame.

Once you clear that mental space, you can start rebuilding. Momentum grows from repeated, small wins that compound. The first call you make after a long silence. The first disciplined morning routine after months of chaos. The first honest conversation with a colleague or client when things have been shaky.

Momentum is a series of decisions that become habits. Habits that become your new standard. And it starts with you deciding that the negative self-talk no longer has a place in your story.

So here’s my question: What do you have to lose? Except the doubts, the frustrations, and the fear that’s been holding you back? Nothing.

You’ve been successful before. You can be successful again. The only difference is what you decide to believe about yourself today, and the simple, consistent actions you’re willing to take.

The momentum you want is waiting on the other side of that refusal to accept defeat.
